To Fidel Castro
Sierra del Escambray, November 3, 1958
Fidel
Iâm sending you a preliminary report, written on the run, of events to date and of the difficulties weâve encountered along the way, attaching copies of the letters.
After the last report I sent, I was held up for a few days due to the prevarication of the [Revolutionary] Directorate, who finally resolved to support the attack on the GüinÃa de Miranda barracks (now Lino Pérez) without the help, in any case fictitious, of that [other] group, who didnât even provide a guide for them. The barracks were said to be an easy target, with 20 or so soldiers willing to surrender. This would have been the case if the bazooka had not misfired four times. The fifth hit the target and the barracks surrendered, with an unknown number of soldiers escaping. The battle cost us two dead, whose names I have included separately, six injured, two of them with fractures, and the loss of a significant amount of ammunition. All of this for eight rifles, one of which I gave to a guide from the Directorate, and very little ammunition. The action was in no way profitable, but politically it was a strong blow that demonstrated our desire to do things properly.
Two days later, we headed for another small barracks defended by 50 soldiers, but I told the troops to hold their fire until 3:00 am, as we didnât have enough ammunition to capture it through a direct assault because it is open terrain for two leagues all around. The bazooka was not in position in time so we had to lift the siege. We did a forced march to the Banao barracks, which has 30 soldiers, along the Trinidad-Sancti SpÃritus highway, but lost a day due to the stupidity of the guides who said it was five hours away whereas we walked for 12 without getting there. Despite everything, we carried out the operation the following day, but the bazooka failed, forcing us to retreat without having fired a shot.
I called together the action chiefs in the surrounding localities to give them general instructions on what they had to do and asked them for details of friendly and enemy banks. I decided to attack a few of them, one of them a Canadian bank, with the intention of leaving IOUs that informed customers that the revolution would take responsibility for repaying their money. But the leadership of the Llano [urban underground] opposed this (because no action chief said anything and neither did Diego, but Sierra did). Moreover, they boycotted the actions or were scared [to participate]. Weâll have to work this out later. We were unable to do anything in Sancti SpÃritus, as you will see in the letter. In Fomento, they performed very poorly and gave up when Bordón got there.
Cabaiguán, whose chief is one of Faustinoâs brothers, responded very well, but unfortunately, one of the many stupid guides, remnants of what the Second Front left us after it disintegrated, got us lost yesterday, which meant we couldnât attack.
